I, now blind, would like to share my tragic story of realization, so that others may learn from my mistakes and refrain from doing the same things that I did. I was born and raised in Corinth, or so I thought. When I was a lad, a prophet had told me that I would kill my father and marry my mother and so in fear of my future, I ran away from home. As I seeked a new place to live, I came across a king who wanted to cross the path before I. This enraged me and I ended up killing him and his soldiers single handedly. At that time, I thought little of it and continued on my way. I kept walking until I reached a kingdom which was in pure, utter distress. A Sphinx had been giving the people a lot of trouble and so I decided to put an end to it. I correctly answered the Sphinx’s question and drove her out of the kingdom. The people of the kingdom rejoiced by crowning me king and giving the queen my hand in marriage. The Kingdom I had stumbled upon was Thebes and the King, Laius, had gone missing a while ago. I ruled fairly and justly until the people came to me and complained about disease and death in the Kingdom. They had also heard that their former king, Laius, had been murdered in a road scuttle. I decided to call the blind prophet, Tiresias to clear up all the confusion. Tiresias started saying that I was the one who had killed Laius and I got upset. I blamed my brother in- law, Creon, for working with Tiresias to get me out of the throne. But everybody , except my wife, Jocasta, believed that I killed Laius. I was furious, but also started to worry that they were true. I found out so much information about my past that I didn't know, like the fact that I was adopted and that my real parents were Laius and Jocasta. When Jocasta found out about this, she hanged herself, for she couldn't bear the pain and humiliation. I also, gouged my eyes out, because I couldn't bear to look at my children who were also my brothers. I decided that I was better off physically blind, rather than figuratively blind because I couldn't see the truth through them before. I left Thebes, humiliated, and went to live in a forest by myself, because death was too soft of a punishment for the crime I had committed. I was a sinner and the prophecy had come true. I had killed my father and married my mother. Although I had no bad intentions while trying to find my own destiny, it turned out that I did indeed complete actions that I am not so proud of. I realized that every single one of my actions have consequences, which show the world what kind of person I am.My realization and awakening led me to my doom. I, the Great Oedipus, am nothing but a sinner.
